Sustainable weight loss generally leads people to lose 1 – 2 lbs per week. In order for a persons body to lose weight they must control their calorie intake. Burning more calories than you consume will result in your body being in a calorie deficit – a calorie deficit requires your body to burn stored fuel (i.e. fat) as energy – this results in weight loss. For example, if your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate – which is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a standard environment)  requires you to eat 1,800 calories per day to maintain current weight – then you eat slightly less calories than this!

Sustained weight loss doesn’t mean starving yourself or eating 500 calories per day or nothing in some cases! It means eating a healthy balance of food, with controlled portions and a variety of fresh nutrients. Don’t be fooled by online posts saying someone lost ‘x’ amount of weight online in one week with this latest diet. Results like these are not healthy and are unsustainable. If you want to see long term results that allow you to eat tasty food and without starving yourself just keep things simple:

  1. Control your calorie intake
  2. Get more active
  3. Eat more fruit & veg

Make sure you eat less than your BMR as mentioned above. Sustainable weight loss takes patience but your body will thank you for it and not fall back into its old ways. Yo yo diets are a big no no, healthy balanced food is a yes! So, as you can see it is possible to lose weight and maintain the body and health that you’re aiming for.
